Bus Crashes in Montgomery County on Interstate 70

Eighteen people suffered injuries on Friday afternoon when a coach bus crashed on Interstate 70 in Montgomery County. According to police, the bus veered up an exit ramp at the Danville exit, went through a stop sign, came down a hill, and rolled on its side. The occupants of the bus were students and chaperones from the Missouri School for the death. Every occupant of the bus suffered injuries although none of the injuries were life-threatening. The occupants were transported to University Hospital in Columbia for treatment. Police are still investigating the crash.

Although this investigation is still underway, the preliminary report supports the notion that human error contributed to this crash. If this error is attributed to the bus driver, then his or her company could be liable for the injuries to the occupants. Businesses are liable for the negligence of their employees through what is known as respondent superior. This means that if an employee negligently causes an injury while in the course of performing his duties for the business then the business is liable for the employee's negligence. Therefore, if the bus driver was negligent in this crash, his employer would be liable for any injuries caused by the accident.
