St. Louis Child Dies from Strangulation by Window Cord

Authorities from the St. Louis Police Department responded to a call Monday night where a two year-old boy got caught in a nylon cord of family's window-blind. The boy was taken to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital where he later died where he was pronounced dead from strangulation. Authorities believe that the boy climbed upon the window sill and got wrapped up in the cord. The boy then fell of the sill, and the cord strangled to boy. Police have not stated whether any charged will be sought in the matter.

This tragic incident demonstrates the importance of consumer safety research, and the need for companies to continue to make products safer. Although this accident appears to be an isolated incident, window-blind producers should take note and attempt to make the blinds safer. The parents of this young boy may have a claim against the blind producer for products liability. The standard for a product to be measured is whether the product is reasonably safe for ordinary use. If the product fails this simple test, the manufacturer can be liable for damages the product causes. The uncertainty in this particular case is whether the child climbing on the window sill constitutes ordinary use. If the parents bring a claim against the manufacturer, this will likely be the crux of the case.
