State and Federal Efforts Honor Our Fallen Heroes; Applying for Federal and State Line of Duty Compensation Benefits

"Meyerkord and Meyerkord, a Legacy of Legal Innovation"

In 2009, Missouri Representative Mark Bruns sponsored House Bill 580 which came to be known as the "Line of Duty Compensation Act." The bill became law on August 28, 2009, as RSMo §287.243.1, and provides compensation for a broad class of public safety workers who are killed in the line of duty. A detailed claim for compensation under this section must be filed with the Missouri Division of Workers' Compensation within one year of the officer's date of death. The claim must include (1) the name and address of the claimant, (2) a full statement of the important facts resulting in the death of the public safety worker, and (3) all other relevant information. If these requirements are met, the public safety worker's family will be entitled to Twenty-Five Thousand dollars ($25,000). In addition, a fallen public safety officer's family may qualify for benefits under the Federal Public Safety Officers Benefit Program (PSOB). Applicants who qualify under this federal program are entitled to a payment benefit of Two-Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars ($250,000).
