Possible Listeria in Eggo Waffles

|

Kellogg has made a recall on their Eggo waffles after routine testing lead to the discovery of possible contamination. The contamination concern is Listeria, a pathogenic bacterium that can be deadly especially for children or people with a weak immune system. The symptoms are similar to the flu in which someone affected can produce a fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, and diarrhea.

Although no complaints were reported, Kellogg recalled 10,000 cases that were distributed to stores in 25 states. Anyone who bought the specified product is advised to contact the company through an 800 number for a full refund.

Traceability is pertinent for a company like Kellogg to be able to administer a product recall. They have to be able to identify the product that has reached their end consumer for their protection. Kellogg was able to identify the potentially affected batches and provide the UPC code and 800 number to the public. Thankfully, on January 4, 2011 “The Food Safety Modernization” was signed. This law requires every Food Manufacturer and Distributor to have the ability to track their products.

There are cases in which product injury or even death have occurred. In fact, there are approx. 27,000 people killed or severely injured due to product injuries. Some of the products that have shown liability include defective medical devices, toys, consumer and household products, electronics, and defective automobile parts and products just to name a few.
