Elementary Student Struck And Killed As He Walked To School

|

A pedestrian accident has the Columbus Police encouraging parents to take the time to talk to their children about making safe choices on their way to and from school. The Columbus Police say an 11-year-old boy was struck and killed as he walked to school Thursday morning. The fatal pedestrian accident happened just after 6 a.m. near Woodward Park Middle School near the intersection of Karl Road and Penworth Drive.

Columbus City Schools have released the identity of the child. According to Columbus Police, the boy did not use the crosswalk as he ran across Karl Road and was struck by a motorist. Police say it appears the driver was not speeding. The child was transported to Riverside Methodist Hospital, and he later died from his injuries. According to the Columbus Public Schools, there is no crossing guard assigned to the crosswalk.

This is the second deadly pedestrian accident in Columbus in only 12 hours. The night before, a 7-year-old girl was also struck just in the 4700 block of Kingshill Drive around 7 p.m. Police say that child also died at the hospital. The Columbus Police say the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Authorities have not identified the child yet. Witness say they saw the accident and tried to help the child while waiting for first responders.
