Child Was Struck At Dangerous Bus Stop

|

An 11-year-old girl was injured in a pedestrian accident as she attempted to get on a school bus in in north Charlotte. Police say the child is hospitalized after being struck right outside her home near Lasalle and Irma Street on Tuesday morning.

It is unclear if the oncoming car that struck the little girl failed to obey the school bus stop sign. Officials say the driver did remain at the scene of the crash and cooperated with police. The little girl was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center. Her family reports the girl is in stable condition but has swelling of the brain. Doctors are hopeful for a full recovery. Police say no one else was injured in the pedestrian accident.

Her grandmother witnessed the crash and said she had her by the hand when they began to cross the street and did not see the car approaching. Authorities say the victim attends Bruns Academy and officials said the school principal visited the child in the hospital shortly after the accident.

The accident is causing family members to asked whether the driver was speeding and why the little girl has to cross the street to get on the bus. The family says they had initial concerns when school officials moved the bus stop across the street to a more dangerous location. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District says they are reviewing requests received regarding this bus stop and will determine if any changes are needed. According to investigators, they are uncertain if speed was a factor in the crash but no charges have been filed.
