A fatal vehicle accident took place in Mechanicsville, Virginia on Sunday around 7:10 in the morning involving a single vehicle. The road crash took place when a 2013 Toyota Yaris veered off of the roadway while exiting off of Interstate 295 onto Route 1. Allegedly, the driver had been exiting at a quick pace and as a result, hit trees before the vehicle overturned. Tragically, the driver passed away at the scene of the accident. The driver was not wearing her seatbelt.

Seat belts are extremely important in providing a safe experience for all occupants of motor vehicles. In case of an accident, seat belts reduce the risk of injury for vehicle occupants by about half. Additionally, in 2014, more than half of the people who passed away as a result of a vehicle accident were not wearing their seatbelts. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in the United States, over 15,000 lives are saved each year because of the use of a seatbelt in vehicle crashes.
