Ohio Teen Killed in Accident on Property

|

An Ohio teen was killed at an abandoned property when he fell 50 feet down an elevator shaft last Wednesday night. According to the Toledo Police, the 16-year-old boy was at an abandoned apartment building around midnight with friends. As the group of teenagers explored the inside of the dark building, a male teen accidentally fell five stories down an elevator shaft to the ground level. A 911 call was made by three other teens who were trying to help the boy. Emergency responders rushed the boy to St. Vincent's Hospital while performing CPR. The teenager was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The fatal accident took place at the Rosemary Apartments in west Toledo, located at North Detroit and Phillips Avenue. According to the City of Toledo documents, the building has been vacant since 2005. Over the years, the property owner of the apartments has been in court multiple times for code violations. According to the Department of Neighborhoods, the building was purchased in 2001 by J & G Property Management, Inc. The property is also tax delinquent and was listed as a public nuisance on May 3. People continue to break in the building despite it being boarded up numerous times. The property owner will be charged with failure to abate a public nuisance.
