Hundreds of Food Recalls Issued in 2016

|

According to Time, there have been about 560 recalls in 2016 from both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture combined. The recalls have ranged from food products like sunflower seeds to flour to meat products. While it may seem as though food is becoming increasingly more and more “contaminated” and prone to recall, that is not quite the case. Food manufacturers have gained more advanced technology over the years that assists in detecting any issues that would result in a product recall. Advancements in food safety are being made, and recalls are something that follows these advancements.

Some of the biggest food product recalls made by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2016 include frozen products, chicken products, flour, and sunflower seeds. For example, Time reported that nine hospitalizations and three deaths occurred this year as a result of CRF Frozen Foods’ products. Furthermore, the “contamination” associated with the products recalled in 2016 has ranged from bacterial pathogens like listeria to plastic remnants found in the food.
