Man in Wheelchair Dead After Pedestrian Accident

|

A man in a wheelchair was struck by a vehicle causing his death and the driver has now been charged. The accident happened at the end of March when a 75-year-old man was attempting to cross the intersection of Raleigh Blvd and Martin Luther King Blvd when he was struck by a 37-year-old woman. The man died after being taken to the hospital. The driver is believed to be traveling at a speed of 50 miles per hour and has been charged with failure to reduce speed and death by motor vehicle.

It is obvious that pedestrians have a greater chance of being injured or killed in an accident involving a motor vehicle. In fact, there are nearly 5,000 fatalities that occur due to pedestrian accidents each year. Driver negligence in the form of distracted driving, speeding, or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is the cause of most pedestrian accidents. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reminds all people that travel on foot to wear reflective clothing, use sidewalks and crosswalks, and travel in well-lit areas. Unfortunately, the most cautious of pedestrians continue to be at risk of being injured or killed in an accident due to the negligence of others. Motorists must fully focus on their surroundings while operating their vehicle in order to avoid a pedestrian accident from occurring.
