General Motors is issuing a third recall for an issue on defective vehicles because the first two recalls did not correct the problem. The recall is for 1.4 million vehicles that can potential leak oil that could lead to a fire resulting in possible damage to garages and homes. Along with the property damage, owners are at risk of injury or death and 19 injuries have been linked to the defect. GM issued a recall in 2008, and another in 2009, for the problem and approximately 1,300 vehicles that were believed to have been fixed caught fire. The majority of the fires occurred after the driver would turn the vehicle off.
The latest recall includes vehicles that have a 3.8 liter V6 engine and include Pontiac Grand Prix, and Buick Regal manufactured in 1997-2004; 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impalas; 1998 and 1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigues; and Chevrolet Monte Carlos produced in 1998-2004. GM believes the problem is the wearing of a valve gasket cover that permits oil to drip into the exhaust manifold resulting in a fire. The company is unsure of how to correct the problem since the previous attempts to fix it were unsuccessful. Owners are encouraged to park their vehicles outside until the issue is solved.
