|

A three-vehicle auto accident on Interstate 70 in Columbia, Missouri resulted in a driver sustaining injuries. On Tuesday night at approximately 11:49, Columbia police responded to an accident involving a passenger vehicle and two tractor-trailers. According to authorities, 35-year-old Nerissa Seielstad was traveling the wrong way in the westbound lanes on I-70. Seielstad collided head-on with a tractor-trailer and then the second tractor-trailer rear-ended the first truck. Emergency crews had to extricate Seielstad and the driver of the second tractor-trailer. Seielstad sustained serious non-life threatening injuries, and both truck drivers were uninjured. Police issued Seielstad with citations for careless and imprudent driving. The roadway reopened a couple of hours after the crash.

The word accident is often thought of as something that is unavoidable, however, when referring to car accidents the majority of them are preventable. Each year there are thousands of auto accidents that result in property damage, injuries, and fatalities. According to the Association for Safe International Road Travel, auto accidents claim the lives of 37,000 individuals annually in the United States. Negligent driving, dangerous roadways, mechanical defects, and design flaws are a few causes of auto accidents, and those responsible should face consequences.
