Zofran Linked To Severe Birth Defects

|

If you’re pregnant and suffering from severe morning sickness, chances are you first try to find homeopathic remedies to stop the symptoms. Unfortunately, some women have such severe nausea nothing helps them, and sometimes drugs may need to be used. Likewise, when such pregnant women were prescribed Zofran, they are now facing heavy consequences in doing so.

Zofran is an anti-nausea drug prescribed to cancer patients, and those who have recently had surgery. The FDA has not approved Zofran for safe use in pregnant women, yet the makers, GlaxoSmithKline, have been marketing it as a good alternative for nausea. As a result, many women who used Zofran during their first trimester of pregnancy are having babies born with severe birth defects. Such birth defects include congenital heart defects, cranial defects, cleft palate, and cleft lip.

GlaxoSmithKline knew the potential harm Zofran could cause during pregnancy, yet chose to negligently push the drug to physicians. It was found during testing on animals that Zofran reaches past the placental barrier, and, therefore, is unsafe for use in pregnant women. Sadly, now babies are being born with life debilitating defects that will be with them their entire lives. Families that have suffered by the hands of the pharmaceutical giant are now suing for negligence, and failure to warn of the potential harmful side effects.
