Zofran use linked to birth defects in pregnant women

|

Zofran is the latest drug that is the target of several lawsuits from undesired side effects suffered by users. In addition, Zofran is a drug that helps prevent the chemicals in the body that trigger nausea and vomiting. Particularly Zofran is prescribed to patients who may have nausea and vomiting caused by surgery or other medicines used to treat cancer: chemotherapy or radiation treatment. On the other hand, some physicians have prescribed Zofran to pregnant women to help them combat morning sickness.

As a result, some women are coming forward and alleging that they were not sufficiently warned of the potential risks associated with taking Zofran. For instance, Zofran crosses human placental barriers in pregnancy. Likewise, based on animal studies in connection with Zofran, it is not safe for use during pregnancy. Finally, since 1992 Glaxo Smith Kline has received hundreds of reports of birth defects linked to the use of Zofran in pregnant women.
