Accidents involving pedestrians injure and kill thousands of individuals every year in the United States. In 2012, pedestrian accidents claimed the lives of 4.473 individuals and an additional 76,000 pedestrians sustained injuries in accidents with vehicles, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On average, a pedestrian was killed every two hours, and one sustained an injury every seven minutes in 2012. Causes of pedestrian accidents vary, but the most common cause is driver negligence.
