Police Sergeant Killed in Pedestrian Accident

A Bellefontaine Neighbors Police Sergeant has been killed in a pedestrian accident on Monday morning. The accident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. in north St. Louis County. According to authorities, Sgt. Peggy Vassallo was off-duty and operating her Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling along Lindberg Blvd. when she rear-ended a Kia Amanti near Old Jamestown Road. The accident was minor, and the Kia sustained a small dent to the rear bumper. Vassallo stepped out of her vehicle and approached the Kia to exchange information when a Ford Fusion came from behind them in the eastbound lane striking Vassallo. She was transported by ambulance to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. The female driver remained at the scene of the accident and is cooperating with the police investigation.
