IndyCar Racer, Justin Wilson Dies in Track Accident

|

It was a sad day for IndyCar racing fans because one of their own died in a tragic and somewhat freak accident. Furthermore, 37-year-old, Justin Wilson died during the Verizon IndyCar Series race at Pocono Raceway on Monday when he was hit in the head by a flying chunk of debris.

The chunk of debris that killed Wilson flew off of racer, Sage Karam’s vehicle who was leading the race when his car spun out of control on Turn 1, Lap 179. It is vastly known that Indy drivers are far more prone to suffer head injuries because the cockpits of their cars are open and therefore debris can strike them.

Wilson is the second driver to die in the U.S. as part of an auto racing sport. The first driver that was killed was Dan Wheldon who was killed in 2011. Wilson leaves behind a wife and two young daughters, Jane who is 7-years-old, and Jessica, age 3.
