Blue Bell recalls all ice cream in connection with deadly listeria

|

Week after week, there have been gradual recalls of Blue Bell's ice cream products, and now the manufacturer has decided to pull the remainder of its products off the market. In addition, all frozen yogurt, ice cream, sherbet, and various other ice cream novelties have been pulled due to listeria contamination concerns. Thus far, three people have died from the listeria-laced ice cream, and five others became ill after having Blue Bell products.

The recent mass recall of Blue Bell products was prompted after a half-gallon of ice cream tested positive for listeria. Likewise, this scary fact means that listeria is potentially in various places at different plants within the company, and is not an isolated occurrence. At list point in time, Blue Bell is not sure how the listeria made it into their facilities, but are committed to finding out the source and thus recalled all products for safety.

The recall started out with five listeria illnesses in Kansas and grew to three in Texas. In Kansas, all of the people infected were all patients at the hospital being treated for various ailments. While in the hospital, four of the patients consumed milkshakes at the hospital made with Blue Bell ice cream, and it is unclear how the fifth contracted listeria.

In Texas between 2011-2014, the three people with listeria traced it back to identical strains from Blue Bell ice cream products. Some of the symptoms of listeria contamination include nausea, diarrhea, fever, headache, and abdominal pain. To learn more about this recall, please click here.
