Pedestrian Accident Results in Jail Time

|

A fatal accident occurred last year on June 9 when a senior expatriate banker hit a man with his vehicle at the Waterfront car park. The Hong Kong court that handled the case did not accept mechanical failure claims, and the man who was driving the vehicle was sentenced 21 months in jail and a five-year driving suspension. The judge claimed that the sentencing was very hard, as she knows that the accident was not intentional, but was the driver was operating his vehicle dangerously. Allegedly, the driver might have been traveling about 60 miles per hour in an area whose speed limit was about 18 miles per hour.

According to the Pedestrian & Bicycle Information Center, in 2014, around 4,884 people were killed in pedestrian-vehicle accidents and around 65,000 people were injured. Often, these accidents occur as a result of drivers traveling at a high rate of speed or failing to stop when they were supposed to.
