Train Struck and Killed Pedestrian

|

A Metra train in Chicago struck and killed an individual Saturday night. The train accident happened around 9:30 p.m. in the Chicago suburb of Palatine. The Union Pacific Northwest line had departed at approximately 8:30 from downtown Chicago and was traveling to the northwest suburbs. The train was the 725 and was delayed for more than 2 hours. The accident is currently under investigation and the name and age of the victim has not been released.

Each year there are thousands of accidents involving trains colliding with vehicles or pedestrians. Typically, all railroad accidents result in serious injuries and fatalities. The weight of a train combined with speed creates a force that causes devastating accidents. Several factors contribute to a train accident and several accidents occur in railroad crossings that lack proper warning devices.
