A young Kansas man lost his left leg in a tragic work accident in Ellsworth on Monday. According to officials, a 28-year-old Co-op worker got caught in a grain bin. OSHA officials are investigating the workplace accident, and their safety officials say the man’s leg got caught in a running auger. The man was rushed to the hospital where doctors had to amputate.
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Tuesday that the 28-year-old worker in Ellsworth had his left leg surgically removed Monday after the accident. In a statement by the agency, OSHA says the unnamed worker stepped into an open auger while inside a steel grain bin while the auger was operational. OSHA's regional chief said a worked should never be allowed to enter a bin when an auger is in operation. The president, of the co-op made no comment on the accident when questioned on Tuesday.
