A mother is speaking out against a measure to legalize recreational marijuana use in California after he son was killed in a drugged driving crash. The Ramona mother is sharing the story of her son’s death to bring awareness to the consequences of Proposition 64. The proposition seeks to legalize recreational marijuana and has gained much attention at a summit in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The summit was hosted by the Automobile Club of Southern California. Experts were brought together to discuss the consequences of legal and illegal drugs on traffic safety.

The Ramona mother lost her son over six years ago during a crash on San Vicente Road. Her son was a passenger in the vehicle driven by a man under the influence of marijuana. Her son died from injuries sustained in the crash, and the loss of her son has devastated the entire family. The Ramona mother believes recreational marijuana will lead to an increase in the number of drug-related crashes and deaths and she wants to prevent its legalization.

The Proposition 64 seeks to allow people over the age of 21 to legally use marijuana without a prescription. Opponents argued that fatal crashes involving drugged drivers have increased and will continue. The director of AAA Traffic Safety says there needs to be more research before states can fully understand the impact legalizing recreational marijuana. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, fatal drugged driving crashes more than doubled after recreational marijuana became legal in states such as Washington.
