St. Louis Jury Awards $55M in Talc Powder Case

|

After a long day of deliberations, a jury in St. Louis has awarded a plaintiff with $55 million after a woman developed ovarian cancer linked to a Johnson & Johnson talc powder. The three-week trial is the second in over 1,200 lawsuits that have been filed against the company accusing them of failing to inform consumers regarding the risks of developing cancer after using talc-based products. The verdict is the another victory for plaintiffs after another jury was in favor for the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer that was linked to Johnson & Johnson’s powder items. The award was for $72 million, and J & J are planning to appeal the decision.

Numerous women are coming forward to file cases against Johnson & Johnson after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer as a result of using Baby Powder and Shower to Shower Powder on their genitals. Recent studies have indicated that women who use talc-based powders on their genitals have a 1 in 50 chance of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. At the trial in February, an expert announced that there have been 45,000 ovarian cancer patient fatalities that could potential be linked to talc-based powders. Plaintiffs and experts are accusing J & J of failing to warn consumers of the possible risks of cancer.
