Hy-Vee Recalls Blue Cheese

|

Grocery chain Hy-Vee, Inc. has been added to the stores recalling Maytag Raw Milk Blue Cheese. This recall will cover 8 states across the US. The West Des Moines, Iowa company has chosen to voluntarily recall this product due to a possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. Improper handling of food, such as cheese, can cause Listeria monocytogenes. This is an organism that can infect people after consumption and cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. Those most at risk are children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Anyone in possession of the blue cheese should discard of it immediately.

Improper handling of food by companies happen all over our country and kill thousands each year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Listeriosis, is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Each year it is estimated that about 2,500 people become seriously ill with listeriosis in the United States, in which 500 people will die. Fortunately, victims of contaminated food may have the right to compensation for their damages.
