Homeless Man Injured in Pedestrian Accident Involving Police Officer

|

A homeless man suffered severe injuries after a pedestrian accident occurred involving a police officer. The accident happened on Tuesday night in Houston, Texas. According to police, at around 10:30 p.m. an undercover narcotics police officer was traveling in a pickup truck on Chartres when he attempted to turn onto Commerce when he struck the man attempting to cross the road. An ambulance transported the pedestrian to the hospital and he is believed to have suffered two broken legs. The preliminary results of the investigation indicate that the officer could do avoid striking the man, and charges are not expected to be filed.

Pedestrians and bicyclists are some of the most vulnerable travelers on roadways. Every year, thousands of pedestrian accidents claim the lives of individuals and a vast majority of these accidents could have been avoided. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages all travelers to follow safety precautions, pedestrians are encouraged to make themselves as visible as possible. Wearing reflective clothing and walking in well-lit areas can help drivers to see pedestrians. However, distracted driving, driving under the influence, and speeding are common examples of negligent driving that causes pedestrian accidents.
