Worker Killed During Steel Plant Accident

An Illinois man was killed in a worker accident at a Venice plant Friday morning. The 56-year-old Granite City man was working at Custom Steel Processing Plant when he was killed on the job after being trapped under a coil at approximately 8 a.m. Custom Steel Processing plant is located at 1001 College Street. According to officials, the man was moving a giant spool of steel with a crane when it fell and trapping him. The long-time employee at the facility was found dead only five minutes after the coil fell on top of him. His death was caused by blunt head trauma, according to the Madison County Coroner. The facility ordered all 20 to 30 employees to go home for the day following the accident. The Venice Police Department and OSHA are currently investigating the fatal work accident.
