Missouri Widow Surprised With $40,000 Ambulance Bill

|

A Missouri widow is failing to negotiate with the insurance company after a fatal medical emergency. Recently, the widow received an unexpected medical bill she cannot afford to pay. The 79-year-old woman lost her husband to a stroke last year. His medical emergency was declared severe enough that medical professionals chose to airlift him from his home in Cuba to St. Clare Hospital in Fenton. The widow felt like she had no choice in the situation and she is now financially responsible for the full $37,001.50 helicopter bill. The elderly woman said she did speak up, telling hospital personnel that her husband was insured through the VA and Medicare. Unfortunately, neither of these insurances will pay any portion of the $37,001.50 helicopter bill she received from Air Evac Lifeteam. Her husband has Medicare Part A, and only Part B covers air ambulance transports. And the VA denied the claim as well, reporting the emergency treatment was not authorized. The widow is on a very fixed income and cannot see how she will ever manage to pay the bill. Air Evac Lifeteam also says there is nothing they can do about the invoice.
