Fatal Accident Leads To Highway Improvements

The City of Wildwood has proposed a plan for safety improvements after a fatal pedestrian accident. The plans hope to make the intersection of Highway 109 and Shepard Road safer. The proposal stemmed from a fatal accident in April when a 7-year-old student was struck and killed while crossing the road. The child and her father were attending a father-daughter dance when the fatal accident occurred. As they walked across the road to the elementary school, a motorist struck and killed the girl. City Officials believe the proposed changes for the intersection will encourage pedestrians to use the crosswalk. The crosswalk will be much safer to cross the street, and officials hope pedestrians will not use the middle of the road. The plan includes a clearly marked crosswalk with flashing beacons and signs to alert drivers when pedestrians are walking in the crosswalk. MoDOT has been approached to help assist in funding the project. City residents think it is a genuine effort in response to the tragedy. Others believe the Rockwood School District is not addressing their lack of parking for school sponsored events. The school district reports they are aware of the parking constraints at Babler Elementary and are looking for ways to accommodate crowds.
