Late Thursday night, an off-duty police officer was killed in a car accident. The accident occurred in North Carolina when the 23-year-old officer was operating his personal vehicle on Interstate 77 southbound near the city of Dobson. The officer was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and authorities are investigating the accident to determine the cause.

The estimated number of auto accident fatalities is 37,000 each year in the United States alone. The number is staggering and quite alarming when considering nearly all auto accidents are preventable.
