Pedestrian Accident Injures Man in Salt Lake City

|

On Saturday evening, a pedestrian accident left one man in critical condition in Salt Lake City, Utah. According to police, the 66-year-old man was standing near 200 South and 500 West on a Utah Transit Authority when he was struck by a passing vehicle. The Salt Lake City police reported that the driver became distracted, causing the vehicle to veer off the roadway and onto the platform. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital and authorities are investigating the accident. Citations have not yet been filed.

Pedestrians are at risk of suffering serious injuries and death when they are struck by a vehicle. Their lack of protection makes them one the most vulnerable persons on the roadways. Tragically, nearly 5,000 pedestrian accidents occur each year and the vast majority of these deaths could have been avoided. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages all pedestrians to follow safety guidelines such as wearing reflective clothing and using sidewalks. However, those pedestrians will continue to be at risk for an accident when caused by negligent driving. Fatigued driving, distracted driving, and operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol are common reckless driving examples that cause pedestrian accidents.
