Light Pole Crashes Through Car In Downtown St. Louis

A close call happened in downtown St. Louis today when a light pole fell on a car while utility workers were repairing it. A car was waiting at the light at the intersection of Pine and Broadway when a light pole came crashing down and smashed through the rear of the vehicle. Luckily, there was only the driver in the vehicle. Pictures show the entire back-end of the car crushed. According to the St. Louis Director of Operations, crews were repairing street lights along Pine, and as they replace the electrical wires underneath the pole, it came loose and fell on top of the car. Thankfully, no one was hurt. However, it was a very close call, and someone might not have lived through the accident if they were in the backseat.

The Director of Operations said it appeared the pole was rotten and often the concrete is rotted away by salt that is spread on roads and sidewalks during winter weather. Most downtown light poles haven’t been replaced for 50-60 years, according to the Director. The St. Louis Director of Operations assures the public that this incident is a one-time thing, and crews will learn from this event.
