Zofran Use During First Trimester Harmful for Unborn Babies

|

Zofran is an anti-nausea medication used to help cancer patients, and those who have upset stomachs after surgery. In addition, although the FDA has cleared Zofran as a safe treatment in such patients, it was never cleared for use in pregnant women.

Sadly, GlaxoSmithKline, the makes of Zofran, ignored such warnings and marketed the drug as safe, and even offered financial kickbacks to physicians who prescribed it to pregnant women. Tragically, the pharmaceutical giant knew the implications of giving Zofran to pregnant women, yet chose to ignore them so they could make more money. During animal testing, it was found that Zofran reaches past the placental barrier.

Furthermore, when mothers take Zofran during the first trimester of pregnancy, the likelihood of delivering a baby with birth defects greatly increases. Likewise, such birth defects include cleft lip, cleft palate, and heart defects.
