|

On Friday, a White House staffer was killed in Maryland in a bicycle accident. According to Howard County police, 34-year-old Jake Brewer was participating in a charity bicycle ride when he lost control of his bicycle and was struck by a Honda Pilot at around 3:40 p.m. Brewer was killed in the accident, and the driver of the Honda was uninjured. Brewer was a senior technology advisor at the White House. He leaves behind his wife, daughter, and another child on the way. President Barack Obama released a statement expressing his sympathy for the family and praising Brewer for his work.

Bicycle accidents typically result in serious injuries and fatalities. In 2013, 749 bicyclists were killed in accidents involving motor vehicles. Individuals that choose to walk or ride a bicycle should take all safety precautions to avoid an accident. Wearing reflective clothing, utilizing sidewalks and crosswalks when available, and restricting distractions can lower the risks of being involved in a pedestrian or bicycle accident. Unfortunately, the safest bicyclists can be involved in an accident due to the negligence of a motorist. Distracted driving has caused several pedestrian and bicycle accidents that could have been prevented. If you have been injured or lost a loved one in a bicycle accident, it is important to learn about your rights by contacting a St. Louis bicycle accident attorney.
