|

On Wednesday night, police responded to a call regarding a train accident. Union Pacific Railroad Company had called the police to report that an individual was struck by at the Olive Street railroad crossing. According to authorities, 51-year-old Melvin Adams was either riding his bicycle or walking the bicycle across the tracks when he was hit at approximately 10:49 p.m. Adams was pronounced dead at the scene and the accident is under investigation.

Railroad accidents occur over 3,000 times each year in the United States, according to the Federal Railroad Administration. The majority of these accidents result in serious injuries, property damages, and death. Trains weigh thousands of pounds, and when combined with the speed they travel, a collision is devastating. Similar to all accidents, several train accidents are preventable and caused by the negligence of others. Negligence of the train conductors, operators, and the railroad company lead to accidents. Several railroad accidents occur at railroad crossings and are caused by a lack of warning signals and devices.
