California Cheese Company Recalls Product Due to Listeria

In San Fernando, California a major cheese company is recalling several brands of its product due to listeria contamination. Furthermore, there have been over 24 reports nationwide in the last five years linked to the soft cheese; one death was reported in Ohio. Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are stating that, Karoun Dairies, Inc. is voluntarily recalling and halted production of the following cheese brands sold under these names:

  • Arz
  • Gopi
  • Queso Del Valle
  • Cemtral Valley Creamery
  • Yanni

In addition, more than two-thirds of the people who became ill were of Middle Eastern or Eastern European decent after eating the cheeses. Sadly, five of the illnesses were in pregnant women, and tragically one suffered a miscarriage. Overall, fourteen of the listeria related illnesses were in the following states:

  • California
  • Ohio
  • Colorado
  • Illinois
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York
  • Tennessee
  • Washington

According to the CDC, the illnesses have traced back to the company as far back as 2010, and the most recent illness happened last month. Listeria related illness and should be taken very seriously. Likewise, Listeria can be deadly especially in the elderly, people with compromised immune systems, pregnant women, and very young children.
