Fatal Train Accident in Philadelphia

|

An Amtrak train traveling from Washington D.C. to New York derailed on Tuesday at approximately 9 p.m. The Northeast Regional Train 188 was transporting 238 passengers and five crew members when the accident occurred on one of the busiest railroad corridors in the United States. The train included seven cars, all of which were derailed along with the engine. Officials have confirmed five fatalities and expect that number to rise. Several passengers have not been accounted for and there have been over 140 individuals taken to hospitals for injuries. Authorities are preparing for a lengthy investigation in which they are not yet sure of what caused the derailment. The Federal Railroad Administration along with the National Transportation Safety Board have also arrived at the scene to investigate.

Frankford Junction is the area where the accident occurred in Philadelphia. This area of railroad tracks has a large curve and is close to the accident scene of the deadly 1943 train accident. That accident killed 79 people and the train was also traveling from Washington to New York. Amtrak officials stated that all rail service will be suspended in this area until further notice.
