Monday afternoon in Seymour, Indiana was hectic following a fiery semi accident, and chain-reaction crash that shut down the northbound lanes of I-65 for hours. In addition, the first accident happened when 48-year-old, Clifton Bennett was driving his semi near mile marker 44 and noticed his rear trailer tires were on fire. Furthermore, Bennett pulled over on the shoulder of the road, and began to try and put out the fire. After an unsuccessful attempt and the fire grew larger, Bennett dethatched the trailer from the truck. Bennett was hauling 40,000 pounds of peanut butter, which was up in flames on the side of the road. Bennett was uninjured in the incident.
Just a short time later a multi-vehicle crash happened just a mile down from the truck fire. That crash occurred when 48-year-old, Richard Kermode was driving his vehicle on I-65 when he rear ended 19-year-old, Mackenzie Pritchett who was stopped in traffic. As a result, the crash caused a chain-reaction accident with two other vehicles. Pritchett's vehicle hit 38-year-old, Dawn York's vehicle, and that crash propelled the second car into 45-year-old, June Beatty. As a result, Kermode's vehicle caught fire as well following the accident. Kermode was the only driver uninjured in the accident, but was cited for driving too fast to avoid a collision. All three other drivers did suffer minor injuries, but are all expected to make a full recovery.
