Pedestrian Killed in Alton

|

On Monday morning, a pedestrian was struck and killed in Alton, Illinois. The 61-year-old man, Lester W. Anderson was hit by a vehicle on College Avenue around 9 a.m. The vehicle was heading eastbound on IL-140 and was operated by Dossie W. Robinson. According to the Alton Police Department, Robinson struck Anderson near Powdermill Road and Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Robinson stopped at the location of the accident and is cooperating with the police. The Madison County State's Attorney's Office has yet to charge Robinson, and it is unknown if he will be charged. The accident is still under investigation.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 4,743 pedestrians are killed by vehicles each year in the United States and an additional 76,000 sustain injuries. These statistics equal a fatal pedestrian accident occurring every two hours and an injury every seven minutes. In larger populated areas, pedestrian accidents are becoming an epidemic due to the increase of accidents each year. All pedestrians are encouraged to follow all safety precautions including wearing reflective clothing when walking in the dark, traveling in well-lit areas, and using crosswalks and sidewalks whenever available. Unfortunately, pedestrians that exercise all safety precautions are still at risk for being involved in an accident with a vehicle due to driver negligence.
