Pharmaceutical giant facing lawsuits over Zofran use during pregnancy

|

It is recently coming to light that the use of Zofran during pregnancy can cause devastating results to the unborn child. Likewise, women who took Zofran for the use of curbing morning sickness during their first trimesters are having babies with major birth defects. Such defects include cleft palate, cleft lip, and heart and liver defects. Sadly, not only do these injuries severely impact the family's immediate life after the birth, the damaging effects follow the child for the remainder of his or her life.

GlaxoSmithKline is the maker of Zofran, and is being sued by consumers because it is alleged that they marketed the drug as safe although knowing it to be otherwise. In addition, GSK is also charged with providing monetary compensation to physicians who prescribed Zofran to pregnant patients. The FDA has not approved the use of Zofran during pregnancy, and it was found in animal studies to reach beyond the placental barrier. GSK had knowledge of these risks, and continued to push Zofran as a safe treatment for morning sickness during pregnancy. Now, families are suing the makers for negligence. Generally Zofran is used for the treatment of nausea and vomiting in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation, and those who have recently had surgery.
