Two doctors who traveled to Maryland to perform late term abortions were arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder in the deaths of several viable fetuses. These arrests mark the end of a 16 month investigation into the doctors, which started with a botched abortion on an 18 year old girl who was taken to a nearby hospital by the two doctors performing the abortion. The girl suffered medical complications because of the abortion.
Maryland allows for murder charges to be brought against one who intentionally kills an otherwise viable fetus. This law does not apply to doctors or medical professionals who are licensed to perform these types of procedures. However, these doctors were not licensed by the state of Maryland and can be held criminally liable for performing the procedures.
