An Italian cruise ship ran aground which killed three people, injured more than twenty, and left over fifty people listed as missing. Pictures show the ship on its side in what appears to be very shallow waters. Authorities haven't ruled out the possibility of a technical error on the ships part, forcing the crew to move the ship closer to the shore to save the passengers. However, the ship's captain was arrested late Saturday night and is being investigated for manslaughter. The main concern for investigators is why the captain didn't sound a mayday alarm.
Gianni Onorato, president of Costa Cruises, gave a preliminary statement, "On the basis of the initial evidence — still preliminary — Costa Concordia, under the command of Master Francesco Schettino, was sailing its regularly scheduled itinerary from Civitavecchia to Savona, Italy, when the ship struck a submerged rock." Rescue teams worked through the night to pull some four thousand people from the water after the ship ran aground.
