No Charges for Teen Widow Who Killed an Intruder

In Oklahoma on New Year's Eve, a recently widowed teenage mother was at home with her baby when two men tried breaking down the door of her trailer. The mother immediately grabbed a shotgun, her baby, and a handgun and headed to the back bedroom where she called a police dispatcher. On the phone with the dispatcher, the mother asked repeatedly if she could shoot the men if they broke through the door of the home. The dispatcher did not tell her to shoot. However, he didn't discourage her from shooting either. After some twenty minutes of the men trying to gain access into the home, one of them broke through the front door and charged at the teen with a hunting knife. The teenage mother while holding her baby shot the man and killed him. His accomplice ran off after hearing the shot.

According to the teen, the men were most likely trying to gain access to the home for the prescription pain medicine her late husband needed before passing. Authorities say they will not be pressing charges against the teen for the shooting because it was clearly a matter of self defense. The teen mother will not be held liable for the death of the man because of the attempted burglary of her home, but had that man not actually gained access to the home or the mother not have waited for him to do so she may have been liable for the death.
