Eleven people in New Zealand died in a hot air balloon accident when the balloon's pilot drove the balloon into power lines causing the balloon to catch fire. Several of the passengers in the balloon jumped while the balloon was still in the air to escape the fire above their heads. Witnesses say the balloon was emitting flames up to 30 feet high as it burned mid air. One witness recalled the balloon hitting the power lines, catching fire, rising to nearly 500 feet while on fire, and quickly falling to the ground. No one survived the crash, and several bodies were charred when responders arrived. Hot air balloon riding in New Zealand is very popular especially in the area where the accident happened. This tragedy marks the worst vehicle related accident in New Zealand since 1979 when a New Zealand aircraft went down killing over 200 people on board.
