A study of 286 pregnant primarily Latina women from low-income families in California found that exposure to PBDEs or polybrominated diphenyl ethers, was linked to lower birth weights in babies. The chemicals in the study are not currently being used, however, they weren’t abandoned until 2004. the types of products that contain these chemicals are: cars, bedding, high chairs, strollers and other items that are replaced infrequently. Researchers acknowledged that maternal weight gain in the population may be a factor that lead to lower birth rates and that may be unrelated to chemical exposure. The researchers believe that their experiment should be replicated for confirmation of the implications, thereby refuting critics of their results.
