A Penn Valley, California, woman, 43, was charged with a DUI after drifting across two lanes and colliding head-on with a van on Highway 20, according to the California Highway Patrol. The van was carrying four passengers: three high-school students and a woman. All passengers were wearing their seatbelts. A high school student involved in the crash was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center. She sustained a broken right collar bone and non-paralyzing spinal fractures. The driver of the van and the other two youth passengers also sustained moderate injuries.
Twenty-five minutes prior to the accident, a teenage witness saw the erratic driver and called 911. The license plate matched the one involved in the collision. Officials speculate that the accident could have been prevented with quick action by the police after the witness reported the erratic driving but it was noted that other officers were either too far away or dealing with other incidents immediately after the call.
