Missouri's Dog Bite Statute Benefits Victims
"Meyerkord and Meyerkord, LLC: A Legacy of Legal Innovation"
In 2009, Missouri passed statute 273.036 which changed the existing dog bite rule in Missouri. Previously
Missouri followed the "one bite" rule, which favored the pet owner and required a victim to prove that the dog that bit him was a known biter. The new law no longer requires knowledge that the dog was a biter. It treats dog bites as "strict liability" cases. This means that if the dog bites, the owner is automatically liable for the dog's actions that result in property damage or injury. The law also allows damages for pain, lost wages and medical expenses for the victim.
Pets are a part of most American households today. However, even domesticated animals can become vicious and attack their masters or other humans. The attorneys at Meyerkord and Meyerkord, LLC have experience with animal bite cases and can help you recover for injuries that you or a family member sustains.
