Roadway Work Zones Require Extra Caution

The attorneys at Meyerkord and Meyerkord have seen first-hand how car accident effect both the injured and their families. In 2009, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that there were 22,382 Americans killed in passenger vehicles. The threat of an automobile accident is greatly increased in highway work zones. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDot) recommends that drivers take special precautions in these areas to help reduce or eliminate auto accidents and the devastating effect they can have. First, drivers approaching a construction or work zone should reduce their speed to the suggested speed limit. Having drivers within the work zone traveling at a consistent and reduced rate of speed allows each driver to leave adequate braking room between each vehicle and between each vehicle and safety barriers, trucks, construction equipment and workers. Responsible drivers in work zones must also drive defensively to stay safe and help protect themselves and their families from negligent drivers.
MoDot also encourages Missourians to drive defensively yet responsibly in work zones. This means that drivers should ensure they have adequate room to stop, and that when dealing with a vehicle which is following too closely, drivers should avoid slamming on their brakes or greatly reducing their vehicle speed because this practice can produce road rage and greatly increases the chances of a collision. When possible, MoDot recommends that a responsible driver pull over and let the offending driver pass. "If this is not possible, turn your headlights on and off several times during daylight hours to illuminate your taillights and warn tailgaters they are too close. If at night, lightly tap your brake pedal to illuminate your brake lights." If you or a loved one has been injured in an automobile accident while traveling through a work zone, you may be entitled to compensation.
