Johnson & Johnson Lowers Dosage to Prevent Overdoses

"Meyerkord and Meyerkord, LLC: A Legacy of Legal Innovations"

Recently, Johnson & Johnson decided to reduce the recommended dosage of Extra Strength Tylenol in order to reduce the possibility of overdose with their product. The active ingredient in the drug, acetaminophen, has been linked with liver failure. The packaging will begin to reflect the change in the dosing instructions in Fall 2011, and will now be a maximum of six pills daily, down from eight pills. Dosing instructions will also reflect the change in Regular Strength Tylenol sometime in early 2012. Acetaminophen is one of the most popular pain relievers in the U.S. and is an active ingredient in Vicodin and Percocet, as well as many other common products like NyQuil and Sudafed. The FDA is concerned with the amount of acetaminophen and the alarming number of accidental overdoses due to the prevalence of the drug in products that consumers use concurrently. The label changes come at a time when Johnson & Johnson is under-fire for recalls of several of their products, from hip implants to prescription drugs at their Puerto Rico manufacturing facility. Johnson & Johnson denies that the label changes are related to the recent recalls.

Johnson & Johnson's mounting troubles put drug and device safety in the spotlight.
