According to the Missouri Department of Public Safety (DPS), there were a total of 66 fatal traffic fatalities in Kansas City in 2011, exactly the same figure as the year before. The Kansas City Police Department's 2012 - First Quarter Fatality Report lists the top contributing factors in fatal auto accidents as being speeding, stop sign and traffic light violations, and improper lane use, with traffic deaths occurring on I-435, U.S. 169, Paseo Boulevard, and other streets and highways throughout the metro area. The Missouri DPS ranks Kansas City as second in the state for the frequency of motor vehicle accidents, accounting for 15% of all accidents statewide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that Kansas City has a higher rate of motor vehicle mortality rates, with 12.6 traffic deaths per 100,000 of the population than the national rate of 11.1 per 100,000. It is worth noting, however, that the city's rate is lower than Missouri's statewide rate of 14.8 per 100,000.
